What if you don’t love your kitchen?
If I had to choose one room in our home which I don’t love, it would be our kitchen. I don’t mention it much because I am genuinely grateful for what we have, but our kitchen needs a makeover to improve its functionality and overall look.
The cherry wood cabinets are badly scratched (which you can’t tell in pictures). I want to paint them white someday, and the countertop pattern is too busy for my style. The island has an upper seating area that breaks up the small open-concept living area on the main floor. We want to remove that, making the space look much bigger. And the cabinet storage options need improvement.
To look at it from a glass-half-full perspective, I like the backsplash; it is unique. When we moved in, we replaced the appliances, sink, and faucet, which look nice. I like the window that allows the sun to beam in, and we have a beautiful view of our outdoor living space.
As the kitchen is considered the heart of the home, you would think that it would be our top priority for renovation. Although we are getting closer to that goal, I have learned to appreciate and work with what I currently have.
The point is that if you don’t like a room or space in your home, there are ways to give it a little love. These are some of my favorite ways to transform your kitchen into a beautiful and functional space using simple planning, decorating techniques, and accessories for kitchen countertops.
This post is about accessories for kitchen countertops.
How to start your kitchen countertop transformation
1. First, remove everything from your kitchen counters
It’s essential to start with a blank slate when cleaning or organizing a space. This means removing any clutter or items that don’t belong in the area you’re working with.
Once you’ve cleared your counter space, take a few moments to evaluate what you have left and if they are products you need to keep on the kitchen counter.

2. Cleaning the kitchen counter areas
If you’re cleaning the kitchen, you can start wiping down the exterior of your cupboards with a damp cloth. Remember to clean the handles and any hard-to-reach areas.
Next, focus on the countertops and backsplash. Use a cleaning solution, scrub brush, or sponge to remove stains or buildup. Be sure to rinse the surfaces thoroughly with water.
Finally, take a look at your appliances. Wipe down the exterior of each one with a damp cloth. Pay special attention to the areas around the knobs and buttons, as these can collect dirt and grime.
If you have a stainless steel dishwasher, refrigerator, or other appliance, use a special cleaner designed for stainless steel to keep it looking shiny and new. By taking these small steps, you’ll be well on your way to a beautifully organized counter area.

3. Planning and Accessorizing
You can create a kitchen with visual interest and functionality by using clever storage solutions, optimizing the layout, and choosing the right materials.
To enhance the appeal of your kitchen, consider adding everyday items like a breadboard leaning on your backsplash, planting herbs in a small planter, or creating a vignette with multiple functional items and decorative pieces.
These types of simple adjustments not only elevate your kitchen’s aesthetics but also inspire you to spend more time in it.
Kitchen Countertop Accessories to Consider
1. Canisters
Canisters look great on countertops, whether they are transparent glass or colored. Store dry goods that you use regularly to bring functionality to the space.
Look at options that fit your design style, such as bamboo, ceramic, or glass – most options come in multiple sizes, which can provide progression from ascending heights.

2. Fruit Bowls
Use decorative accessories, like a large bowl, to display fruit and produce. They come in various materials and textures that can give a decorative accent to a counter or kitchen island.
The rattan bowl is ideal for storing fresh fruits or vegetables. Its white-washed texture will add a touch of freshness. Another great option is the wooden mango bowl with a ribbed texture.
Both bowls are footed, which gives them height and creates openness around their placement. The scalloped bowl is a popular design element that can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any space in your home.

3. Cookbooks
If you are looking for functional decor items, cookbooks are a fantastic addition to any kitchen counter. Their beautiful covers and at-home charm add character and warmth to any space.
One way to store your cookbooks is by leaning them against the far end of a backsplash or keeping them in a pretty basket or tray. You can use the cookbooks you have or start collecting new ones. I recently began collecting cookbooks and found that they also make excellent coffee table books.

4. Pretty Towels
Adding kitchen towels to your kitchen can be both functional and decorative. You can hang them as a statement piece on a hook or oven door.
Good quality kitchen towels can enhance your cooking experience and add a special touch to your kitchen. I love the aesthetic of Turkish towels in both the kitchen and the bathroom.

5. Cutting Board
Rectangular wood or marble breadboards will bring style to your kitchen countertops and are also multi-functional. They can be used as cheese boards, charcuterie boards, or breadboards.
Layer it with a round breadboard against your backsplash for the latest designer look. Many options are available if the height between your countertop and upper cabinets is limited. I prefer breadboards with a handle when they are on display.

6. Herbs and Planters
Add a little life to your kitchen countertop by accessorizing it with natural plants. Adding fresh herbs to a beautiful vase or planter will bring nature inside and fill your next meal with flavor and aroma.
If herbs are not your thing, you are some beautiful faux greenery options to dress up your countertop. Adding greenery can soften the lines and add texture to any designed space.
Designer Tip: If you don’t like the container but love the faux plant, purchase a larger planter you love and set it inside. It works every time!

7. Glass Soap Dispensers
Instead of the typical dish soap bottle, add pretty dispensers to your countertop by purchasing an attractive container that can be refilled.
If you are like me, you will also want some hand soap nearby. These practical and beautiful options make your countertop look a little more special.

8. Small Jars and Salt & Pepper Grinders
Tiny jars used in a countertop vignette can be both functional and pretty. Use jars for salt, sugar, and honey, for example. They sit beautifully with other decor items. These are also a great adder to a kitchen with open shelving.
Having salt and pepper grinders or shakers nearby is ideal for everyday cooking. Wood grinders are our favorite, but the gold and glass option looks beautiful!

9. Wood Risers and Decorative Trays
Wood risers are excellent for holding dish soap, candles, or plants. Risers are also great for adding a little height to form a vignette.
Talking about vignettes, you can’t go wrong with a tray. Trays can look amazing on the corner of an island or kitchen countertop. Add three items to the tray to complete the look.

10. Utensil Holder and Wooden Spoons
Using a utensil holder with wooden spoons next to your stovetop is a simple adder that is functional but also decorative. There are many styles to choose from, so you can be sure to find something you love!
Designer Tip: I also like to use a utensil holder as a vase for fresh flowers. Keep a few on hand that can easily be displayed on a kitchen island or dining table when you want to switch things up.

11. Framed Prints
If you have not noticed, leaning a framed print against your backsplash is very popular. This can bring a pop of color and texture and add a conversation piece to your kitchen countertop accessories.
Frames can match your decor by choosing natural or stained woods, black, white, or gold accented. Slip these types of prints into a frame for a beautiful counter display.

12. Accent Lighting
If you have room on your kitchen countertop, add a small lamp. It will provide accent lighting and beauty to your decor.
Please make sure you take the time to measure. You want the lamp’s shade to appear as an accent and not be hidden by upper cabinetry. This beautiful piece will serve you for years to come.
