Garden Beds and Window Boxes: Discover the Best Plants for Fall
Looking to add some fall color to your outdoor space? Whether it’s a front entrance, window box, or garden bed, there are plenty of plants that can thrive in the cooler temperatures. These are the best plants for fall gardening!
This post is about the best plants for fall.
Best Plants for Fall
Chrysanthemums
Also known as mums, these late bloomers come in many shapes and pretty colors.
It is best to plant your mums when they are not fully bloomed so they will bloom later into the fall season.
Dusty Miller
This silver-grey foliage is so pretty and will bring some contrast to your fall container garden.
The leaves bring a unique texture to gardens like no other.
Aster
Asters bloom in the fall and are another great option for containers or garden beds.
Many colors and bloom varieties will give your garden color for the whole season.
Pansy
Pansies come in various colors and bloom from early spring to late winter.
They are beautiful in fall containers and can love the shade to full sun.
Heuchera
Also known as coral bells, this pretty foliage looks excellent in perennial garden beds and will become the love of your containers.
There are a few varieties, but my favorite is this reddish burgundy color that reminds me of autumn.
Sunflower
This vibrant yellow will pop in the fall. They make excellent cut flowers and will rebloom in gardens depending on the variety.
Loving a mix of full sun, part sun, and shade, this flower is a winner in my book.
Salvia
I planted salvia in my containers and my new front garden bed for the summer season. These flowers will bloom late into the fall season.
They have a few color choices, but purple is my favorite.
Ornamental Cabbages
These are prettier versions of what we know as cabbage, and they love the fall.
These ornamental flowers can withstand frost and look fabulous in containers and garden beds.
Updating a Garden Bed with the Best Fall Plants
On Saturday, we drove to Farmer Brown’s Greenhouse on the other side of Riverview, New Brunswick, to Dawson’s Settlement. I was looking for a mix of fall favorites for our front containers and new garden bed.
This summer, we added a red maple to our property, giving me a new garden bed to plant, so I am looking forward to watching it evolve.
I planted aster for fall, which will grow 8-15″ high and 16-24″ wide, so I am excited to see how they fill out the space over the next few weeks.
While planting the asters, we saw this little one enjoying our salvia plant!
The Best Plants for Fall Containers
We purchased our containers a few years back from Costco. They have been durable, and I like the height of them for our front entrance. Both containers have been planted the same to line each side of our front door entry. They will fill in more before the snow hits.
Plants Used Above:

- Aspen White Garden Mum (Chrysanthemum)
