I’ve created accent walls in my current and previous homes. I am always looking for ways to incorporate more of them. An accent wall can transform a space’s look and feel and tie the overall design together.
If you want an easy accent wall idea for a bedroom, one of my favorite design projects has been adding a board and batten accent wall to our primary bedroom. Despite its small size, the wall opened the space and added some much-needed character.
It was one of the first DIY projects we completed together, and I have no intention of changing it. My husband would be shocked to hear this, as I’m always coming up with new ideas – change is practically my middle name!
How to Choose a DIY Wall Design
Wall design enhances the space’s character when creating an interior design plan. If you are considering adding an accent wall to a room in your home, consider the following tips and tricks to guide your decision-making process.
1. ASSESS
Take a few steps back to assess your room or space thoroughly. Pay attention to any empty walls that may grab your attention due to unique architectural features, focal points, or simply because they are the primary walls when entering the space.
2. SENSE
How do you want your room to feel? Think about what emotions you want to feel when you are in the room. Would you like the wall design to provide a cozy, comforting ambiance, make a bold and colorful statement, or exude a sense of inviting warmth?
3. DESIGN
Delve into your decorating style. Is your home characterized by a modern design, traditional classics, a blend of transitional elements, country-inspired charm, bohemian aesthetics, or perhaps a coastal theme? By identifying your specific design style, you can tailor your decisions to align with your overall design concept.
Best Wall Decor Ideas
1. Picture Frame Molding
Box trim, also known as picture frame molding, is an intricately designed decorative molding with timeless elegance. Its intricate patterns and classic aesthetic can transform any room into a sophisticated space. I love the look and hope to use it in the future.
Depending on the look you are looking for in the home, this molding looks amazing throughout an entire room instead of one accent wall.
2. DIY Board & Batten
This stylish accent wall provides many design options. While it offers some traditional designs, you can get creative and try something unique, such as a geometric accent wall. Our board-and-batten design is in our primary bedroom makeover.
We also created a different design pattern in our family room. You can get creative with the spacing, create your board-and-batten designs, and even paint it a different color than the rest of your room to make a bold statement.
3. Wallpaper Accent Wall
Whether you’re a fan or not, wallpaper is in style. I love the latest designs, especially those with muted neutral tones or vintage-inspired patterns. Once you find the perfect paper for your room, this accent wall can make a stunning impact. If you’re up for the challenge, I’ve seen some fantastic options at Home Depot, Etsy, and Amazon.
Wallpaper offers many color and shape options, from geometric patterns to pretty stripes and floral designs. It provides an excellent addition to any living space, whether a home office, bedroom, living room, or powder room.
4. Painted Accent Wall
Creating an accent wall with wall paint is one of the simplest ideas. To make a bold statement, try painting your accent wall a different color than the rest of the room. Don’t forget to choose a color that complements the other walls and fits with your home’s overall color scheme. This will give your room a cohesive and stylish look.
5. Paint Stripes
Choose your color palette and use painter’s tape to paint stripes as an accent wall. This is a fun and easy way to transform an empty wall into a DIY masterpiece. It is excellent for small spaces, as the stripes will create an optical illusion that your space is larger than it is.
Colors can either be complementary or monochromatic. Understanding these relationships can help you create visually appealing and harmonious color schemes in your designs.
6. Shiplap Accent Wall
The shiplap style is a popular choice for interior design due to its ease of installation. In our fireplace renovation project, we incorporated a shiplap design, achieving a timeless yet modern aesthetic.
One of the great things about shiplap is that you can keep it classic white or introduce a pop of color to create a more impactful visual effect. The texture it adds to the walls and the clean lines of the design also elevate the room’s overall dimension and atmosphere.
It’s worth noting that shiplap isn’t limited to farmhouse or coastal design styles. It can be used horizontally or vertically to make a bold statement in any home, regardless of the existing design style. Its versatility shines through, allowing for endless creative possibilities.
7. Gallery Wall
Designing a stunning gallery wall can be an enjoyable and fulfilling DIY wall art project. It provides a unique opportunity to fill your home with cherished family photos or vibrant, eye-catching vintage images.
Checking flea markets or a thrift store for picture frames can easily make it a budget-friendly DIY project. Let your imagination run wild as you curate a truly one-of-a-kind gallery wall.
8. Stencils
I appreciate the charming aesthetic of stencils in farmhouse designs. However, I’ve also realized they can be incorporated into other interior design styles and work exceptionally well in kids’ rooms.
I became fascinated with stencil art when I first saw Janna’s fantastic work at Yellow Prairie Interiors. Her stencil designs are not only beautiful but also incredibly elegant. If you are a DIY enthusiast wanting to explore the world of stenciling, I highly recommend checking out her website and Instagram account for a wealth of ideas and inspiration.
