How to make a Small Living Room look Spacious
Creating an inviting and cozy living room is a common goal for many, and having limited space shouldn’t hinder your efforts. With the right use of color, arrangement, accessories, and lighting, a small living room can be made to appear larger than it actually is. Let’s explore these details together as I guide you on how to achieve the illusion of spaciousness in a small living room.
Living Room Makeover Ideas
Natural Light
We have a large window in the living room that gets the late sun. I will eventually be budgeting for new blinds in this area that we can open entirely during the day. In the meantime, we have natural light in the back of our house all day, so we do not have blinds or curtains on our kitchen window or patio door, offering tons of natural light flowing into the living room.
Colors
Lighter colors reflect light and will open the space. White is a fantastic color to help brighten the room and anything within the off-white color collection or softer or lighter color collections. Our color choices for this room are BM Collingwood (OC-28) and BM Simply White (OC-117).
Create a Focal Point
There are many options to choose from to incorporate a focal point in your living area. Choose from a fireplace, a window view, an accent wall, art, a television, or a piece of furniture. We updated an electric fireplace (How to Refresh an Electric Fireplace), so it is our chosen focal point.
Living Room Area Rugs
An area rug warms up your space and can make your room look bigger. Choosing the correct size of an area rug and its design is key. You want to ensure your main floor is still showing within the space and keep the rug’s design simple. Pulling your furniture a few inches from the wall onto the area rug is also a great tip.
Adding mirrors or metallic finishes
Mirrors and metallic finishes reflect light and can give the illusion of a larger space. Brass, bronze, stainless steel, and aluminum can be brought in through lighting and accessories.
Declutter for More Space
Keeping your area free of clutter will make your small living room spacious. Clean it regularly, and limit your furnishings and what is on display. Keeping it simple works with limited space.
