How I Organized Our Tea Bags
I decided to use a drawer to organize our tea bags, and I love this idea. We had so many tea bags, and the original packaging cluttered our cupboards.
When it comes to small kitchens like ours, you may find your drawers smaller than the standard size. I turned the clear acrylic organizer sideways to fit into our drawer. This left me more drawer space for tea accessories, glass straws, and other stored items.
This drawer is near our Keurig coffee maker on our kitchen counter. We store other tea bags and coffee pods in airtight containers in the kitchen cabinet above. This cabinet also holds my favorite coffee mugs and our Yeti travel mugs.
Due to limited space, it is as close to a coffee and tea station as possible. It works for us, and I hope it gives you some ideas if you have a small kitchen, too.
Things to Think About When Storing Tea
Proper storage is actually really important to maintain the tea’s freshness, flavor, and aroma. Whether you prefer loose-leaf tea or tea bags, these storage tips will help you enjoy the best-tasting tea for longer.
1. Keep Away from Light
Tea, especially green and white, is sensitive to light. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause tea to lose its flavor and freshness. To avoid this, store your tea in opaque, airtight containers rather than clear jars, which can allow light in. If you prefer the look of clear jars, keep them in a dark cabinet or pantry.
2. Keep a Tight Seal
Tea bags should also be kept in an airtight container if they are no longer in their original, sealed packaging.
3. Avoid Moisture
Tea leaves absorb moisture quickly, ruining their flavor and texture. Keep tea away from humid areas like the kitchen sink or refrigerator. Never store tea in the fridge, as condensation can form and affect the tea’s quality.
4. Store Away from Strong Odors
Tea absorbs surrounding scents, which can alter its natural flavor. Avoid storing tea near strong-smelling items like spices or cleaning products.
5. Use Tea Within the Recommended Time
Even with proper storage, tea has a shelf life. While tea doesn’t go bad like perishable food, it will lose flavor over time. Here’s a general guideline for the lifespan of different teas:
- Black tea: 1–2 years
- Green and white tea: 6 months to 1 year
- Herbal tea: 1–2 years (depending on the herbs)
How to Organize Tea Bags Step-by-Step
This organizational system provides a step-by-step storage method to organize your tea bags:
1. Tea Organization
Sort by Category or Tea Flavor
Before you start organizing, you can begin by sorting your tea bags. Group them based on one or more of the following:
1. Type: Herbal, black, green, peppermint, chamomile, etc.
2. Flavors: Peppermint, chamomile, fruity blends, etc.
3. Caffeine Level: Separate caffeinated from decaf teas for easy access
Once sorted, you’ll better understand the number of categories you’re working with and the best storage solution for you.
2. Choose the Right Tea Bag Organizer
Tea Box Organizers
A tea box with compartments is one of the most popular tea storage ideas for individual tea bags. These boxes are often made of wood, plastic, or acrylic, allowing you to see all your tea choices at a glance.
Clear Drawer Organizers
If you prefer keeping your tea collection hidden as I do, a transparent plastic kitchen drawer organizer is an excellent idea for a tea organizer. These organizers often have multiple compartments and fit well into most kitchen drawers. The design lets you see your tea bags without opening individual boxes.
Vertical Tea Dispensers
A vertical tea bag dispenser is the perfect solution for small spaces. These slim containers allow you to stack tea bags neatly and easily access them. You can even label each dispenser with the type of tea inside.
Mason Jars, Glass, or Pop-up Containers
Use mason jars or other containers for a charming and decorative approach. Arrange the jars on open shelves or countertops for easy access, and you can label each jar with the tea type or flavor. I use the pop-up containers for the loose tea bags. My husband loves his box of tea, like Red Rose, so this storage works for loose tea bags.
Repurposed Baskets or Trays
For a budget-friendly option, reuse baskets or trays around your home to group your tea bags. Organizing them by flavor or type in separate baskets can prevent clutter. Trays are perfect for laying out tea bags flat, making them visible and easy to grab.
3. Label for Easy Identification
Depending on the storage solution you choose, labeling can help organize your tea collection. To identify different categories of tea, use pre-printed stickers or a label maker.
4. Rotate Older Teas
As you organize, take note of the expiration dates on your tea bags. Organize older tea bags toward the front or top of your storage solution so you can use them before they go stale. Make it a habit to rotate your collection every few months to keep things fresh.
5. Keep it Accessible
Place your tea collection in an accessible spot near your kettle or tea station. If you have multiple people in your home, ensure everyone can easily find and access their favorite teas. Keeping everything centralized in one location simplifies things.
6. Create a Tea Station
If you’re a true tea enthusiast, consider dedicating an entire section of your kitchen or pantry to tea. You can create a tea station with all the essentials, such as tea bags, cups, spoons, and sweeteners.
