Time management can be approached differently at various stages of life. In our younger years, we tend to view time as if it’s not moving fast enough, eagerly waiting to graduate, get our driver’s license, own a home, and have financial independence. As we grow older, we start wondering where the time went. This happens every New Year’s Day, during a child’s birthday, when we do not reach our goals, and when we look in the mirror.
You may have heard and even said, “There is never enough time.” Many of us think we need more time to accomplish everything we want. If we had more time, we could eat better, exercise daily, pursue further education, start a business, maintain a clean house, and devote more time to our hobbies.
I remember Jenna Kutcher saying, “Time is our currency.” These words really resonated with me. I had never thought of it that way, but it’s so true! Time is the most valuable thing in life. We need to use it wisely, and we can do that by managing it effectively!

After almost four decades in corporate operations, I’ve learned that effective time management is about efficiency. Good time management skills help you focus on your goals, complete the most critical tasks on your to-do list first, and create free time to enjoy life’s little but most important things.
It seems easier said than done, as we spend hours in traffic and lineups to get our weekly groceries, emails can consume our home and work lives, social media scrolling is a thing, and will the drive-thru get our order right this time? Some days, it feels like everyone wants everything immediately and we will never get caught up. It adds pressure and stress and it can be difficult for us to decide what to focus on.
Seasons of Life
Each season of life is different, so where you want or need to spend your time depends on what is happening around you. And no two lives are the same. This is your life, and the most important thing is that you understand that time management can help improve your overall quality of life.
There is enough time to do what is important to you; you’ll need to figure out what that is. You can start by tracking your time for a week. Oh, I know this sounds like a daunting task; I have tracked my time for work multiple times, but have you tracked your time for your whole day? Seriously, think about it. You may be surprised by what you are spending your time on.
It’s similar to managing your finances. You must first understand where your money is going before you can establish a budget and objectives. By identifying how you spend your time and evaluating whether it’s the best use of your time, you can make adjustments to your life and set goals. The positive aspect of this is that once you’ve done this, you’re well on your way to managing your time effectively and living life on your own terms.

How to Use the Eisenhower Matrix
- List Your Tasks: Write down all the daily tasks you need to complete to understand the importance of time management clearly.
- Categorize Each Task: Place each task into one of the four quadrants.
- Quadrant 1: Urgent and Important (Do)
- Tasks that require immediate attention and have significant consequences if not completed include crises, urgent family matters, paying bills, fixing critical errors, and deadline-driven projects. These might consist of interruptions that can be delegated to others.
- Quadrant 2: Not Urgent Tasks but Important (Plan)
- Tasks important for long-term goals, but not requiring immediate action include strategic planning, hobbies, health and well-being, personal development, home maintenance, financial planning, organizing, and decluttering. These tasks should be scheduled and prioritized.
- Quadrant 3: Urgent but Not Important (Delegate)
- Tasks that require immediate attention but don’t contribute significantly to long-term goals. These might include interruptions, minor requests from colleagues, routine meetings, administrative work, responding to non-essential emails, dealing with colleagues’ urgent issues, and social media notifications.
- Quadrant 4: Not Urgent and Not Important (Eliminate)
- Tasks that are neither urgent nor important are often seen as distractions or time-wasters. Examples include trivial tasks, excessive social media browsing, watching TV, web surfing, doing busy work to avoid other priorities, constantly checking your email, unproductive conversations, and other activities that don’t add value. These should be minimized or eliminated.
- Quadrant 1: Urgent and Important (Do)
- Take Action: Follow the suggested actions for each quadrant
- Quadrant I: Do it now.
- Quadrant II: Schedule it.
- Quadrant III: Delegate it.
- Quadrant IV: Eliminate it.
- Review Regularly: Reassess your tasks weekly to adjust priorities and stay on track, keeping the importance of time management in mind.

- Block Work Hours: Allocate time for focused work, meetings, and breaks. For example, could you set specific hours for deep work? Perhaps schedule meetings during designated times?

- Block Personal Time: Schedule time for family, exercise, hobbies, and relaxation, which contributes to effective time management.
- Assign Household Chores: Create a rotating schedule for chores or assign specific days for different tasks (e.g., laundry, meal planning, groceries, cleaning and organizing).
- Include Downtime: Allocate time for unwinding and self-care to reinforce the importance of time management.

- Physical Planners: Printable Planners, Paper Planners, or Bullet Journals.
