We usually take a vacation week in October as it is one of our favorite months. Our wedding day was in October, so my husband and I like to take some time off together in the fall. We don’t always go far; sometimes, it is just day trips to enjoy the fall colors.
My favorite October trip was the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. If I could recommend one trip in the Maritimes, it would be to drive the Cabot Trail in the fall.
The walking trails and beaches are beautiful at that time of the year, and if you love nature, you will want to go back after your first experience of seeing how pretty the area is when the leaves change.
But even if we stay home and hang out locally, there are always ways to check off our to-do list for the season.
October To-Do List
Creating a November to-do list doesn’t have to be boring. A little bit of organization and some fun ideas will help you reduce the stress of preparing for the upcoming season!
Wellness in October
Fall is the perfect time to slow down and nurture yourself as the days grow shorter and the air changes. I don’t know about you, but fall feels almost peaceful. This time of year, I like to do a personal reset.
- Mindful fall Walks: Step away from your busy days and enjoy a nature walk through the beautiful colors of autumn. Let this time in nature be your moment to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with yourself.
- Warm Baths and Cozy Nights: Treat yourself to a luxurious bath with fall-scented bath bombs or essential oils. Then, curl up with a soft blanket and a good book for the ultimate cozy night. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a busy day.
- Journaling and Gratitude: As the season changes, start a fall gratitude journal. The 5-Minute Journal is one of my favorite ways to reflect. Jot down your thoughts and set new goals for the rest of the year. It’s a beautiful way to practice mindfulness.
- Evening Comforts: As cooler evenings set in, create a calming nighttime routine. Light fall-scented candles, make herbal tea, and unwind before bed. These small comforts can make all the difference in feeling relaxed and recharged.
At Home To-Do List for October
Gardening in October
You can wrap up your garden for the year in October while preparing it for next season. Here’s how to get your outdoor space ready for winter:
- Final Lawn Mow: It’s time for the last lawn mow of the year. Instead of raking your fall leaves, consider mulching and bagging them with your mower. The leaves can be used for compost, mixed into your garden soil, or spread over your plants to protect them throughout winter.
- Bring Tropical Plants Indoors: If you’ve enjoyed tropical plants outside during summer, now is the time to move them indoors. This will allow you to reuse them next summer.
- Cut Back Perennials: Toward the end of October, cut back your perennial plants to prepare them for winter. Use garden shears to tidy your beds, giving them a neat seasonal appearance.
- Fall Flowers: Add fall flowers and pumpkins to your gardens, front steps, or porch. Orange, yellow, or white mums can brighten up your entry.
- Plant Spring Bulbs: For a garden full of early spring blooms, plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, irises, and crocuses in October. You’ll thank yourself when the flowers start popping up next year.
Around the House in October
As the temperature drops, there are a few household tasks that will help you prepare your home for the colder months:
- Deep Clean Your Car: Clean your car inside and out. Clear out items you no longer need, vacuum, and wipe down the interior to refresh your vehicle before winter.
- Clean the Gutters: Remove any debris from your gutters to prevent clogs and prepare for fall rain and winter snow.
- Put Away Outdoor Furniture and Decor: Clean and store outdoor rugs, furniture, and seasonal decor to protect them from the elements during the colder months.
- Set Up Humidifiers: As the air gets drier in fall and winter, set up your humidifiers to add moisture to your home.

- Style Your Home for the Season: Try decorating your table with seasonal elements like pumpkins, fall foliage, and candles.
- Prep in Advance for a Stress-Free Thanksgiving: Set the table the night before, prep side dishes that can be made in advance, or create a timeline for cooking.
