6 Popular Gray Paint Colors for a Classic Look
Benjamin Moore has several options if you are looking for popular gray paint colors. Whether you are looking for a classic look, an airy feel, or a moody interior, I have narrowed it down to six that range from cool to warm.
This post is about popular gray paint colors by Benjamin Moore.
How to Choose the Best Gray Paint Colors
1. Atmosphere
How do you want the room to feel?
When planning the design for your room, think about how you want the room to feel. Choose warm neutrals with yellow, red, or orange undertones if you want a cozy and warm feeling. Choose cool neutrals with green, blue, or purple undertones for an open, airy vibe.
2. Lighting
What lighting sources will you be using?
When choosing the best gray paint color for walls, always consider the lighting sources in the room, including both natural and artificial light. Neutral paint colors are particularly sensitive to lighting changes, so testing the paint color with a sample will help.
Use Benjamin Moore’s color samples and apply two coats of paint to a primed drywall square. Move it around the room throughout the day to observe how the color changes. You can also turn on the artificial lights to see how the color looks under different lighting conditions.
3. Wood Tones
Always compare the paint color to the wood tones in your home.
Before making your final decision, compare the gray paint color to the wood tones in your home. Ask yourself if the undertones of your wood are warm or cool. To ensure consistency, it’s best to match your paint color’s undertone to your wood undertone.
For example, if your floors have a warm orange undertone, I would advise you to opt for a warmer neutral shade on the walls. If you choose a cool neutral wall color, it might bring out the blue or green undertones of the paint and change its actual color.

Best Gray Paint Colors Benjamin Moore
1. Revere Pewter
We initially opted for Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter in our open-concept living area. After painting the room, we noticed that its greige tone had a green undertone that clashed with our wood floor’s red and orange hues. This was my first of many encounters with undertones, so we took it as a learning experience!
As seen in my post, Why Homeowners Love Neutral Paint Colors, I switched to Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood, which complements the space in our home much better. I still love the color Revere Pewter and find it beautiful with a pure white trim. It also looks fantastic on cabinets, as shown in the image below.
2. Iron Mountain
If you’re searching for a warm gray with neutral undertones, Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain is an excellent choice for walls, exteriors, cabinets, and trim. This moody color can even appear as a gray-brown shade depending on the lighting in your room, as seen in the photo below.
3. Conventry Gray
The soft, medium gray shade of Benjamin Moore’s Conventry Gray is truly beautiful, and despite lacking warm undertones, it doesn’t feel cold. I would have picked this color for my home office if my floors did not have an orange tint.
I love the look of the trim being painted the same color in the photo below, but it would also look amazing with a pure white trim, such as Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace. This color would be perfect if you’re looking for a paint color for your cabinets and your kitchen faces south.
4. Stonington Gray
Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore is a softer shade of gray with neutral undertones that stays true to its color regardless of lighting. Personally, I am a fan of this type of color. It complements white trim and black accents such as interior doors, furniture, and decor.
This paint can be used for interior and exterior applications and is a favorite choice for cabinet colors, as seen in the image below.
5. Gray
If you’re looking for an alternative to black, consider using Benjamin Moore Gray. It’s a rich charcoal color with a warm tone and no brown undertones like Iron Mountain. This color is perfect for creating a dramatic effect, especially on pieces with intricate details, such as fireplaces, picture frame moldings, and kitchen islands.
6. Wrought Iron
I chose Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron for our front door, which you can see in my post, 5 Simple Decorating Ideas for Small Porches. It’s a deep, dark shade of gray that looks almost black, making it perfect for front doors.
Plus, it has a beautiful hint of navy undertone that becomes visible in specific lighting. Wrought Iron is an excellent choice for painting cabinets as it adds a luxurious feel to the room. It’s a perfect accent color to create a moody vibe in your space.
What Trim Colors Complement Gray Paint?
If you are not painting your trim the same color as your walls, choosing the right white paint color to pair with grey can greatly impact the overall look and feel of your space.
With so many white paint options available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one to choose. You can narrow down your options by reading my post, The Most Popular White Paint Colors, which will help you make a more informed decision.
