Learn How To Use The Rule of Three In Decorating
Are you familiar with the rule of three in home decorating? It’s a simple yet highly effective guideline for creating a beautiful, well-balanced living space. With just a few tips, you can learn how to create a space that not only looks amazing but also feels inviting and comfortable.
What is the rule of three?
The rule of three is a principle of design that states that objects or elements arranged in odd numbers are more visually appealing to the human eye than even-numbered groupings.
The reason behind this principle is that odd numbers create a sense of harmony, balance, and interest. The rule is used not only in decorating but also in photography, painting, graphic design, and more.
How to use the rule of three when decorating your home?
The 60/30/10 Rule of Color
Did you know that the most balanced and appealing look can be achieved with color? Choose a three-color palette and use it as follows:
- Decorate 60% of the room with the dominant color.
- Decorate 30% of the room with the secondary color.
- Decorate 10% of the room with an accent color.
Of course, the percentages are an approximate guideline, and you can use your eye to determine the color balance.
If you want to change it up and add two accent colors, you absolutely can. Keep each accent color at approximately 5% to keep with the 10% accent color scheme.
When people think of color, they don’t always think of neutrals. But you can also use this color rule when decorating with neutrals.
In our dining room, I used beige as the main color on the walls, floors, and furniture. White was chosen as the secondary color, appearing in the curtains and other accents. Green and black serve as accent colors in the lighting and decorative accessories.
Rule of 3 when Arranging Groups of Objects
When arranging a group of objects or elements, using three, five, or seven items is more aesthetically pleasing than using two, four, or six.
Rule of 3 – Furniture
Have you ever noticed how pleasing it is to the eye when you see an odd amount of furniture used in a room or space? Here are some images from interior designers that use this rule.
For example, in the first photo from Bria Hammel Interiors, imagine if there was only one stool instead of two in front of the table. How would that change the feel of the space? Two stools make it more visually pleasing to the eye.
In the second image, count how many pieces of future Studio McGee used in this living room. Is it an odd number?
Although the rule is not set in stone, using an odd number when planning your furniture layout is something to think about. Is there something you can change in one of your rooms that would follow this rule and make a difference in your home?
Rule of 3 – Vignettes
Decorating vignettes is my favorite place to use the rule of three in decorating. Try grouping together items in sets of three to create a sense of balance and coherence.
For example, you might display three candles of varying heights or three vases of different shapes and sizes. You can also use five or seven different items to create a vignette when decorating.
In the image below, the two books and the candle count as 1 item. These are then combined with the vase and picture frame to equal 3.
This means that you can use a grouping of objects and count it as one, and the theory still works.
By doing this, you bring a sense of unity to the space, and your vignette will look more thoughtfully put together.
Rule of 3 – Pillows
Pillows are another great way to bring in this decorating rule. Whether you are adding throw pillows to an entry bench, a couch, or a nicely made bed, using an odd number of pillows will change the look of your space.
This decorating rule creates an aesthetically pleasing look that will make your space feel more inviting and stylish. So, next time you’re looking to add some personality to your home, consider using throw pillows and remember to stick to an odd number for the best results.

Rule of 3 – Art Prints
Having a gallery wall displayed in my home is something that I have always dreamed of. I found these inspirational images using odd numbers, and it creates a sense of balance and harmony.
I love how art prints can transform the look and feel of a space and add a touch of personality to a home. At some point, I will curate my own collection of prints and display them in a way that reflects my style, which is something to look forward to.
A little tip shown below is to use frames of different sizes, colors, and textures to create a warm and cozy space. Can you think about ways you could incorporate art prints in odd numbers?
