Create Your Own Oasis: Summer Outdoor Decorating Ideas
Summer is the perfect time to revamp your outdoor areas and make them shine. Whether you opt for a fresh coat of paint, new furniture, or vibrant planters filled with seasonal blooms, the possibilities for summer outdoor decorating ideas are endless. I’m excited to share some of these ideas with you and help you get started with your decorating!
Our Summer Decorating Experience
The backyard of our home was the main selling point for us. We were specifically looking for a property with a swimming pool, and upon seeing this one, we knew it was the perfect fit. With a sizable fence and the woods around us, we have created our own private oasis through hard work and inspiration.
Regardless of the size or location of your outdoor area, there are several ways to make it uniquely yours. Whether you have a balcony in a condo, a spacious backyard patio, or a small porch, there are ways to maximize your outdoor space. Here are some questions to consider:
- What do I want to use the outdoor space for? Think of things like morning coffee, outdoor dinners, gardening, etc.
- Is there existing structures that you want to incorporate or should any be removed or repaired? Perhaps the structure just needs a coat of paint or stain, for example.
- Will you be entertaining in your outdoor space? If so, how many people on average would you be hosting?
- How much sun and/or shade does your outdoor space get during the day? This is important when gardening or planting containers, etc.
- Will you be using the outdoor space in the evening?
Once you establish how you want to use your outdoor space, then head over to Pinterest for an abundance of ideas. Pinterest is an excellent source of design inspiration, and I have thoughtfully selected some options for you to jumpstart your creative process.

It is important to note that when you are working within a budget, it may take time to curate the pieces you want for your space. It may take time to add something new or fix something you are not fond of. Patience is key when renovating your home; enjoying the process is so important.
Note: It is always good to start any project with a blank slate, even your outdoor space. This allows you to open your mind and allow you to focus on these simple design tricks.
Summer Outdoor Decorating Ideas
1. Summer outdoor maintenance
To enhance your living space, ensure to repair any damaged structures, apply fresh paint or stain, and perform a thorough cleaning. This may involve tasks like mowing the lawn and refreshing the flower beds with mulch. By doing so, you can prepare your outdoor area to become a seamless extension of your home.
2. Furniture pieces and placement
When it comes to selecting furniture, there are two important considerations. Firstly, you should consider your personal design style and imagine how you could extend this to your outdoor space. Secondly, you should think about how you plan to use the area and what type of furniture would be most suitable. For instance, a cozy patio might benefit from two comfortable rocking chairs for enjoying your morning coffee, while a larger deck could accommodate lounging furniture. If you have a swimming pool, you may need enough furniture to entertain guests.
3. Lighting ideas
If you plan on spending time in your outdoor space during the evening, it’s a good idea to incorporate lighting and lanterns into your decor. This will create a cozy atmosphere and add a serene touch to your oasis. You can install lights on your fences, and trees, or hang them above the area. Another option is to add a fire pit, which can also provide lighting. Depending on the location of the fireplace, a gas option over a wood-burning may be more suitable.
4. Accessorize with outdoor decor
Enhance your outdoor area by incorporating accent decor such as outdoor rugs, decorative pillows, lanterns, candles, centerpieces, and a distinctive end table to hold your morning coffee or after-dinner drink. Pick items that bring you joy and make you feel good. Choose products that complement your personal style, colors that match your surroundings, and textures that add depth. The goal is to create a peaceful and unique space that reflects your personality.
5. Add greenery and flowers
Enhance the beauty of your outdoor space with lush greenery and colorful flowers. Container gardening is a hassle-free and convenient way to achieve this. Simply buy some planters and head over to a nearby garden center to purchase some plants. You can also opt for ready-made containers available at most garden centers for an even easier approach. To give your outdoor space a tropical vibe, consider adding ferns and small palms. This will create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere.
I always look forward to the summer because we get to spend time with so many loved ones who come to visit. Our backyard is a favorite spot for everyone, including our adorable grand puppy.
