My garden and flowers are usually planted by the first week of June, provided the frost has left us in Eastern Canada. On the other hand, May can be a bit of a wild card, with its mix of warm and cool days. It’s a time when we learn to adapt and embrace the unpredictability of nature.
As June arrives, we take the time to put the finishing touches on decorating our outdoor spaces, adding vibrant flowers and comfortable seating. And, of course, my husband, always the one for ambiance, will make the outdoors magical with lighting for late-night evenings. We are preparing to take in the warm sun, indulge in outdoor barbecues, and enjoy summer’s long, lazy days.
Besides hanging around our house, we anticipate making special Father’s Day plans, taking scenic drives to take in beautiful sights, and making our first visit to the local ice cream shop.
This post is about things to do in June.
Summer Solstice
The summer solstice, also known as midsummer, marks the longest day of the year. It occurs when the Earth’s axial tilt is most inclined towards the sun, resulting in the most daylight of any day in the year.
This phenomenon occurs annually on June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21st in the Southern Hemisphere. The summer solstice holds cultural and spiritual significance in many societies and is celebrated with various festivals and rituals worldwide.

Self-Care & Routines
June is a perfect time for a reset. Did you fall back on some of your goals you set earlier this year? Don’t give up. Revisit them, determine if they are still important to you, and get back on track in June.
As the summer season approaches, it’s a good idea to reevaluate and adjust your skincare routine to adapt to the changing weather. Additionally, take inventory of your summer clothing and accessories to see if you need to replace or update anything.
Consider other ways to prioritize your well-being this summer, whether through activities that nurture your mind, body, and spirit, such as meditation, outdoor workouts, or spending time in nature.
This could include things like:
- Trying new skin care products
- Hike in a national park
- Taking a bike ride
- Going to the beach
- Moving yoga or meditation outdoors
- Reading a good book
- Nurturing your outdoor garden

Gardening in June
If you still need to finish your gardening tasks for the season, now is the time. Finish planting your perennial beds, container gardens, and any late summer and fall annuals. As your peppers and tomatoes grow, you should consider caging them in June before they get too big.
Where we live, in late June and early July, it is strawberry season…yum! Fresh strawberries can be found in local markets and grocery stores. If you want to spend the time, you can also go strawberry picking to grab all you need to make your favorite strawberry jam or desserts.
Every year, my family and I look forward to having my mom’s renowned strawberry shortcake. This delightful dessert is a cherished tradition in our household. The recipe for this delicious treat can be found below! The homemade biscuits, in particular, are absolutely exceptional.

Deep Cleaning
It seems like our to-do list never ends when it comes to cleaning, but tackling a few deep cleaning tasks each month can remove any stressful thoughts.
In June, consider getting these things done, and it will make you feel a whole lot better:
- Vacuum all floors and upholstery
- Use a carpet and upholstery cleaner
- Dust light fixtures
- Have a yard sale
Yard Sales
Saturday mornings, our city is filled with yard sales to visit. If you have some things you want to get rid of, June is the perfect month for clearing out the clutter.
1. Need help figuring out where to start? Clean out closets, the basement, the garage or outdoor storage.
2. Price everything with a price tag or group items together at the same price.
3. Check if neighbors are considering a yard sale, as more yard sales in one area attract people.
4. If you want to avoid going through the work of a yard sale, consider using Facebook Marketplace or consider donating.

Create a Summer Car Kit
Not many people think of this, but when traveling for work and personal reasons, I always keep a car kit, which changes by the season. It’s my husband’s idea! In the summer, we like to ensure we have quick access to things for outdoor activities in case we end up listening to live music, visiting an annual festival, or taking a walk or picnic near the Atlantic Ocean.

These are some great ideas when preparing a summer car kit:
- Picnic blanket
- Trunk organizer
- Cleaning Wipes
- Sunscreen
- Umbrella
- Car First Aid Kit
- Sunglasses
- Folding Chairs
