When it comes to gardening tools, I always prioritize purpose and usage. However, it’s always fun to find high-quality, functional, and visually pleasing tools.
You want your tools to be effective but also enjoyable to use. Having visually appealing tools can even add to the overall gardening experience. So, I am constantly looking for tools that work well and have a particular look.
Owning the Right Gardening Tools
I have tried many basic hand tools over the years, but when selecting functional gardening products such as pruning shears, they must be well-designed and easy to use. A simple set of hand pruners with a unique design can be a great addition to any gardener’s list of tools.
Investing in high-quality gardening products can save money in the long run, as they are more durable and require less frequent replacement. The goal is always to invest in the right gardening tools that are a joy to use so they can become an essential part of your gardening routine for years to come.

Most Common Gardening Tools
This is my go-to list for maintaining my garden landscapes, containers and pots, and vegetable garden boxes. These gardening essentials will help you grow the most beautiful flowers, plants, and vegetables, whichever you choose!
1. Short Handle Garden Tools
If I had to choose one common tool in everyday gardening, it would be these short-handled shovels, as I use them the most.
Essential gardening tools include a garden trowel, fork, and spade. I prefer the natural look of the wooden handle paired with a stainless steel shovel and the simplicity of the design. The spade is really great for digging holes in planters.
2. Hand Pruners
Having good quality pruners is crucial when it comes to gardening. Whether trimming smaller branches or preparing flowers for arrangements, these gardening tools are essential.
I also find these cutters useful for cutting fresh flowers and dried plants, especially when filling vases in our home.
3. Watering Can
When choosing a watering can to water your plants, consider the number of plants you have and select a size accordingly. Watering cans are available in various colors and designs, allowing you to choose one that reflects your style—why not make this stylish, too?
To keep your plants healthy, you’ll need to water them daily. It’s important to ensure your watering can is easy to fill, lift, and use.
4. Garden Shovel
You will find that you need to use a garden shovel more often than you think.
Whether working in your yard or garden, having a garden shovel can be very useful when planting or digging holes. It is especially helpful for loosening up soil in garden beds and boxes.
5. Fertilizer
In New Brunswick, Canada, Miracle Grow is a go-to when looking for fertilizer to keep your flowers healthy and blooming. I have used the bloom booster option for many years with extremely good results.
It’s important to have this item as a staple in your gardening tool kit. Consider exploring other quality options at your nearby gardening center if you don’t have access to Miracle Grow.
6. Kneeling Pad
When I’m gardening, this kneeling pad is an absolute must. It’s not because of my age, not yet anyway! It is more because of the comfort it provides when kneeling on the ground to plant or weed.
I use this same pad indoors when painting baseboards, hand-washing floors, and cleaning the oven. It’s one of the most versatile tools I keep in my gardening shed.
7. Good Pair of Gloves
When buying gardening gloves, looking for durable and water-resistant ones is important. I prefer to have a separate pair for putting down mulch. I bought a pair with less fabric and more rubber from Costco, which has been a good choice when mulching.
I absolutely love these blue floral gloves! They’re perfect for everyday use and a functional and stylish adder to your gardening essentials.
8. Garden Cart
A potting bench makes working and planting pots much easier. It reduces the need for lifting and bending and enables you to view the plant layout in your container at eye level.
These types of benches can serve as storage units and are aesthetically pleasing enough to be placed near your garden or on your deck.
9. Garden Hose
My husband purchased a garden hose that was a bright green color, which was out of my comfort zone (I always sway toward neutral colors!).
This hose is stored on the side of our house, and I had reservations about the color initially. However, after more than three years of use, we can confidently say this is the best garden hose we have ever had! We purchased the nozzle separately and highly recommend giving it a try.
10. Standard Hose Nozzle
I think hose nozzles are a personal choice, from a standard nozzle to a watering wand. Depending on what you use your hose for, you may need different nozzles or one that does it all.
You may water your garden, lawn, vehicles, siding, and more! Pick your favorite; there are lots to choose from. This is ours!
11. Mist Spray Bottle
When placing tropical plants outside, it’s essential to have a mist spray bottle on hand to maintain their moisture levels.
While plants like ferns don’t appreciate overly damp soil, they benefit from a refreshing mist. The spray nozzles on these types of bottles are perfect for misting. This spray bottle is versatile and can be used for hairstyling, cleaning, essential oils, and more.
12. Garden Rake
We use a garden rake to loosen the soil in our garden bed before planting in our gardening activities.
The garden rake can also be used to help spread mulch on the soil surface, which helps retain moisture and prevent weed growth. We also use it to spread driveway rock to keep it smooth and tidy.
13. Leaf Rake
If you have trees on your property, a hand rake is a common gardening tool, particularly when leaves start to fall. It helps keep your lawn clean and tidy.
When it comes to a leaf rake, I have tried plastic and steel prongs, but I prefer steel because of its durability and effectiveness.
14. Garden Edger
In my earlier gardening years, my grandfather taught me how to use a garden edger. He emphasized that when creating a new garden bed or simply tidying up an existing one, a garden edger would make clean cuts.
A precise edge is far better than using a shovel to create a line. When using a garden edger, you’ll notice that the results are visually pleasing, but it also helps to keep the grass and weeds from encroaching on your garden beds. Bonus!
15. Planters
I really love these weathered concrete planters! They have such a charming appearance and come in so many different colors.
Planters can be large or small, square or round, textured or glossy; these are just a few options. Shopping for planters is almost like browsing for a new pair of glasses – there’s something different for everyone!
Lawn Care & Composing Tips
Know that you don’t have to compost your lawn clippings. Following a regular maintenance routine and leaving the clippings behind is actually healthy for your lawn. They are a valuable source of nutrients as they break down into the soil.
Although composting is an option, leaving behind these clippings can help reduce waste and provide your lawn with the necessary nutrients, improving its overall health and appearance.
