Family Traditions
Gathering around the table for dinner during the holiday season is a family tradition. Since we don’t use our dining room table regularly, it’s a special treat to sit down and enjoy a meal together. You can easily try these holiday table setting ideas with a few must-haves and elegant pieces when entertaining, making it a beautiful and inviting space.
During the holidays, our dining area is small, so we usually set up another table in the living area and have a couple sitting at the kitchen island. Despite the space constraint, we make it work, and our family loves being together. I always enjoy the process and strive to make my guests feel welcome.
Holiday Table Setting Ideas
1. Create a Foundation
Create a foundation for your holiday table setting by using a tablecloth, runner, or faux greenery down the corner of your table. This idea will set the stage so you can create a beautiful centerpiece.
2. Add a Simple Centerpiece
Use existing holiday decor to create a centerpiece for your table. You can do this with ceramic, cone, or brush trees; candles of any size or tealight holders are also pretty. You could add tree ornaments to your greenery or pine cones for a more natural look.
Don’t overthink it. I pulled out these trees I had for a long time and cut up some faux greenery into small pieces to give it a cohesive look.
3. Add Ambiance
Adding candles, fairy lights, or both is an idea that will give your holiday table setting the atmosphere you are looking for this season. Candles come in all shapes and sizes and are typically what I like to use in any table setting.
It is a simple, inexpensive adder that will set a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere.
4. Include Placemats or Chargers
I purchased rattan chargers at Ikea two years ago and use them season after season. They are inexpensive, and they give a holiday table setting texture. Chargers and placemats are the best base before adding your dishes.
5. Use Pretty Tableware
What is your favorite color of dishes? I tend to stick with classic white and combine it with other colors and patterns. Use your everyday dishware, and depending on what you are serving, you want to add your dinner plate on top of your charger and then a salad plate.
Utensils are next, offered in many colors and textures. Any stainless steel utensils look pretty on a tablescape. Then, add your water and wine glasses before the last step.
6. Napkins and Nametags
Napkins can be folded or loosely put into a napkin holder. An easy, inexpensive idea to display napkins around the holidays is to cut pieces of faux or real greenery and tie a ribbon around the napkin as a holder. You can add a nametag to the ribbon for a more formal holiday table-setting idea.

Using existing decor to create a beautiful table setting helps you slow down and enjoy the company and the food. Sometimes, we think we must purchase everything new to create something different when decorating, but truthfully, you can create something new with what you have by shopping your home and moving pieces around. It is pretty satisfying!
