Christmas Tree Decorating Tips
Did you ever notice that Christmas tree decorating is unique? What are your favorite colors and themes? Use these 7 Christmas tree decorating tips as a guide while still letting your personality shine through.
We bought this flocked tree from Wayfair a couple of years ago; the snow-filled branches bring winter inside. It is a 7′ slim tree fitting with our small living space. Placing the tree in front of the window adds to the outdoor decor you can see in our Christmas Lights at Home Tour.
The newest addition is a simple green 7′ slim tree from Canadian Tire. Even though this room is a work in progress (and somewhat tricky to photograph), this is where we like to hang out. The tree has brought a cozy holiday vibe, and besides the wooden beads, I used decorations I had from years past.
I love tree decorating because every tree is unique and special to you. It brings out your creativity; you can change things yearly or keep them consistent. And who doesn’t love the glow of Christmas tree lights? I plug them in every morning, enjoy them while I drink my coffee, and cuddle up with my latest read and a cozy throw blanket. It brings joy & calm to my mornings.
Christmas Tree Decorating Tips
Tip 1: Add Blinking Fairy Lights
Both of my artificial trees are pre-lit with no movement. I love to add blinking fairy lights to our Christmas trees. The fairy lights are timed and come on automatically in the evening. I used two to three strings of fairy lights per tree. It gives a subtle amount of movement to the Christmas tree. Once you do this, the tree gives off a magical glow and elevates the decorations with a little more sparkle.
Tip 2: Hang Ornaments to the Inside of your Tree First
Do not add any other bulbs or ornaments yet. Adding more oversized ornaments to the inside of the tree first helps fill any see-through holes and causes a layering effect. It also adds sparkle to the interior of the Christmas tree, mainly if you use blinking fairy lights.
Tip 3: Trim with Garland, Ribbon, and Picks Next
Add ribbon for a more formal or traditional look, or keep it simple by adding beads. In this photo, you can see how I used two types of beads, wood and gold. Layering wood with another texture or color gives your tree an interesting effect. When I helped my mom decorate my parents’ tree, I added the red ribbon first. It looks beautiful with all its traditional ornaments. I wish I had taken a picture!
Tip 4: Add Ornaments
One of the unique themes I have used in the past is what I would call Neutral Glam. This included white, gold, and silver with touches of navy & wood ornaments. The Woodland Theme in the second photo included green, brown, and gold ornaments adding natural elements of wood beads and pinecones.
Sentimental Ornaments
Everyone has those unique ornaments. Your tree could be full of them, but I have a few that stand out and always get center stage.
Tip 5: Fill Open Areas with Extra Picks
This is the time I add additional picks to fill in any holes. In this photo, I used cedar picks and blueberry picks I purchased from Rainsford Company. They looked beautiful in the flocked tree and kept it neutral. There are many pretty picks to choose from, and this tip can give your tree a lot of character.
Tip 6: Tree Topper Options
From stars and angels to picks and bows, a tree topper is a personal preference, and you can choose to use nothing. I purchased a lighted star tree topper and am still adoring it. You can also choose not to add a topper and keep it simple.
Tip 7: A Tree Skirt Gives a Final Touch (or should I say throw blanket?!)
I don’t remember the last time I purchased a tree skirt. Perhaps I have not come across a favorite yet, and I know there will be a time a tree collar will be added to my basket. Instead, I used throw blankets to skirt the bottom of my trees. It is a simple, inexpensive option as I have many throw blankets hanging around our home.
