How to Decorate with Vases: Elevate Your Home Decor
Are you curious about how to decorate your home with vases? Vases play an essential role in home decor and are often utilized by interior designers to elevate spaces. Once you find the perfect spot, that vase will become a timeless fixture, continually enhancing the room for years.
Design Experience with Vases
When we renovated our dining room, I invested in a decorative vase and some artificial stems for the table. The stems were more money than I typically would spend.
When they arrived in the mail, I was surprised by the high quality of the stems (quality is essential when choosing faux flowers and stems). It’s been five years, so the investment was worth it; they are showcased on my dining table every summer.
I enjoy changing my decor seasonally. You can easily update your stems for the season when you find the right vase. This is optional, but if you like to change decor as much as I do, it’s my favorite way to bring seasonal colors and textures to your home.
Decorative cachepots or ginger jars are also very popular. The ginger jar can complement other accessories or look beautiful on its own. As I did in my dining room, you can remove the cover and use the jar as a vase. They are also available in florals and other patterns.

What Types of Vases can be Used When Decorating?
Decorative vases come in different styles, sizes, shapes, and colors. They are made of many materials and can be the focal point or sit subtly in the background. They look great in any room, such as sitting on the kitchen island or your bathroom counter.
Glass Vases
A clear glass vase is perfect for showing fresh flowers. Even on their own, glass vases look beautiful as the light passes through. Try filling your glass vases with rocks, decorative glass, or fairy lights. My mom added fairy lights to hers, and it looks beautiful.
Ceramic Vases
Ceramic Vases come in so many different sizes and fit all design styles. They look fantastic when filled with fresh or faux stems. A ceramic vase also looks impressive in a vignette without or without stems. You can also try two vases next to each other, as I did this on my coffee table. I loved that look!
Metal Vases
Vintage comes to my mind when I think about metal vases. In time, they have a patina, giving them texture where they can stand alone, or you can fill them with any floral, including dried botanicals.
Terracotta Vases
These vases can add a rustic charm to your decor. If you have a knack for art, you can make them yours by painting or stenciling them. I have also seen people use Mod Podge to give the vases a unique pattern and texture and spray paint them as a simple way to make a change.
Porcelain Vases
These elegant vases give your designs a sophisticated look. Choose a white porcelain vase for a classic look and fill it with beautiful stems or flowers. Group different sizes and shapes together to create a stunning display.
Glass Bottles
This can be a very inexpensive and pretty way to display fresh flowers in your home. You can typically find these at flea markets in different sizes. Small glass bottles look cute with single stems and can be displayed on any flat surface.
How to choose the right vase for your space?
When selecting a vase, it’s essential to choose one that harmonizes with the decor of your room. Take into account the color, shape, and material of the vase. The color should complement the room’s color scheme, the shape should work well with the overall aesthetic, and the material should fit the style of the space.
For example, a neutral color scheme works well around neutral walls and decor. In this case, texture is more important when choosing a vase or stems. If you have neutral walls or furniture and love color, try bringing color in through vases and florals to make a bold statement.
How To Decorate Your Home with Vases
Vases are not just for floral arrangements. They are decorative elements that can add a touch of elegance and style to any room in your home. You can use vases to display fresh flowers in your living room, dried branches in your entryway, or a single statement piece on your dining table. Vases’ versatility allows you to express your creativity and enhance the aesthetics of your living space.
Entry
Your entry is the first impression of your home. If you have room for an entry or hall table, add natural elements with flowers or greenery in a beautiful vase. This can be easily done in a large or small entry.
Kitchen Island
If you are fortunate to have a spacious kitchen island, it provides an ideal opportunity to craft a stunning centerpiece.
Additionally, repurposing a canister or crock as a unique and charming vase can add a touch of elegance to your kitchen space. You can place the vase on a decorative tray on your island, allowing it to stand out from other decor items.
Dining Room Table
Vases on a dining table can create a beautiful centerpiece, whether filled with flowers or faux green stems.
It’s a great opportunity to incorporate tall vases and floral arrangements that match the seasons, such as apple blossoms for spring, greenery for summer, colorful fall stems, or cedar or pine for winter.
Living Room Coffee Table
Coffee tables are ideal for displaying a beautiful vase as a centerpiece. You can complement the vase with coffee table books that add elegance and other decorative objects such as candles, sculptures, or trays.
These elements combined can create a visually appealing and stylish arrangement for your living space.
Console Table
Consider adorning your console tables with matching vases, creating an artistic display. For example, arrange a trio of vases for a visually compelling effect.
To add dimension and a touch of nature, place a tall vase along one side and fill it with sizable stems to introduce height and natural elements.
Shelves
Don’t hesitate to bring home a uniquely shaped vase when you find one. It will attract attention and become a great conversation piece.
Vases on shelves can be unique in texture, shape, or color. Placing a vase on a stack of books is a great way to add extra height when styling your shelves or using vases of different heights.
Bathroom
Depending on the choice of flowers or greenery, small bud vases can add a burst of vibrant color or a gentle, understated touch. These delicate vases can make a stunning statement when placed alongside a charming countertop vignette.
Side Table or Night Stand
Enhance your side table or nightstand with a small statement vase and an elegant lamp. Consider elevating the small vase with books or a tray to add dimension.
Opt for a medium-sized vase adorned with dried flowers for a charming look next to your lamp. If you have wall sconces above your nightstands, you’ll have ample space to decorate your nightstand creatively with vases.
Do-it-yourself: DIY Vase
I discovered that creating do-it-yourself (DIY) vases is a method to achieve a designer appearance without overspending.
After trying the DIY approach, I stumbled upon some really great YouTube tutorials that have inspired me to attempt this project again. I’m considering using paint layering instead of the antiquing technique I tried above.
