When we purchased our home, I was concerned about the dining area because we enjoy entertaining family and friends. This small dining room makeover was at the top of our to-do list. This dining room makeover before and after became one of my favorite makeovers so far.

Dining Room Makeover Ideas
1. Understanding you can work with the space you have
Our dining area is a small area just off the kitchen. I must admit, I have always dreamed of having a separate dining room to decorate. But, as you will see, you can find creative ways to make the space you have work for you.
2. Create a mood board

I created a mood board in Canva to help me picture the dining room before taking action. A mood board doesn’t have to include the exact pieces of what you will be using. Instead, the mood board should focus on how you want your room to feel.

3. Enlarge the space with light
First, we needed to lighten the space before bringing in the functional & beautiful pieces. To keep a cohesive feeling within our open-concept living area, I lightened the dining room walls using Benjamin Moore Collingwood, which is the same paint color as the living room.
We changed the lighting to something a little more our style. This chandelier opens the overhead space and provides different lighting options over the dining table with a dimmer.
4. Table ideas for small spaces
Table ideas for small spaces can be challenging. Finding a table that would fit our dining room took time and patience. The area is still a little tight for my liking, but I have no regrets about choosing a rectangular table that comfortably dines six people. The table also has an insert allowing us to eat eight people during the holidays.
I do favor the look of mixing different furniture pieces within a dining set, but in this case, we went with a matched set. It fits the space beautifully, and we are pleased with it.

5. Decorating a small dining room
Bringing in color and texture are two things I love about design. How can you do this? Think about curtains, area rugs, pillows, seating, and art. We also want to replace the blinds and are saving money to update the dining room and living room windows at the same time.
