Home Organizing Practices
I regularly use these organizing tips to keep our home from getting cluttered. Despite my years of experience, clutter can still accumulate. My husband admits he likes to keep things (just in case), and I, on the other hand, may get rid of things sooner than we should. So, let’s say we have a good balance between us, so when we do take on a project together, we meet in the middle.
When we decide to update a space in our home, organizing is one of the first things we consider. Decorating a cluttered space is difficult, so decluttering should always be the first step. Let’s go into the details so that you can successfully achieve your goal.
Why is Home Organization Important?
Maintaining a stress-free and healthy living environment is essential to keeping your home well-organized. When your home is cluttered, it can create feelings of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm.
So, taking the necessary steps to declutter your space and create a more organized and functional home is an easy way to mix comfort and aesthetics. Which is what I always strive for!
Garages, storage rooms, kitchen drawers, closets, pantries, and the laundry room are all areas in your home that are likely to accumulate clutter.
To effectively deal with clutter, it’s best to avoid trying to tidy up your entire house all at once. The best way to start is with a systematic, step-by-step approach focusing on one area at a time. For instance, you can begin by decluttering your cookbooks, then your junk drawer, and then your kitchen cabinets.
Basic Tips for Decluttering Your Home
To begin decluttering, you can sort your belongings into different categories, such as items you want to keep, donate, sell, or discard. This exercise can help you identify items you no longer need, use, or love and create more space in your home.
Once you have sorted through your belongings, you can organize them in a way that makes sense. For instance, you can use storage bins to keep similar items together, label your containers to make it easier to find what you need, or use shelves and racks to maximize your storage space.
Following these organizing tips for your home will create a more functional, stress-free living environment that supports your health and well-being. There is no better time to start than now!
Home Organization System
A helpful tip is to focus on decluttering and organizing one room at a time. Break each room into small sections and tackle them individually to make it even more manageable. This approach will help you see progress quickly, motivating you to move on to the next step.
Step by Step Decluttering and Organizing Guide
I highly recommend keeping a to-do list and a shopping list handy, as you may need to purchase new containers or run errands for items you thought you had on hand but didn’t.
Writing these things down will prevent you from forgetting things (I need to write everything down these days!), saving you from the added stress of trying to remember. You will have plenty of things to consider without worrying about these lists.
If your household includes multiple individuals, could you include each family member in relevant tasks? This can be a great way for the entire family to contribute their opinions and participate in the process, resulting in a sense of ownership and responsibility towards maintaining the household.
Step 1: Access & Inspect
The first tip when decluttering and organizing your home is to deal with each item as you remove it from the space. For each item, you will decide one of three things:
- Keep
- Donate or Sell
- Trash
This decision-making process may result in multiple totes, cardboard boxes, or a laundry basket being named accordingly to avoid mixing piles.
- Items to keep can be divided into two categories: 1) things to keep and organize in the same space you are working on and 2) things to keep and store in a different area or room.
- No longer-needed items can be sold or donated. Sell items by having a garage sale or using an online method like Facebook Marketplace; I recommend having two bins: 1) items you want to sell and 2) items you will be donating.
- The trash can be divided into three bins or bags: garbage, recyclables, and organics. If you have to declutter a fridge, check for an expiration date when going through the products. Remember to separate paint cans and batteries to ensure they are disposed of properly.
Step 2: Deliberate & Decide
When decluttering and organizing your home and you find it challenging to decide what to keep, ask yourself the following questions?
- Is this an item I regularly use, or does it make you happy? Definitely, keep it.
- Have I used this item in the last year? If yes, you can consider keeping it. If not, sell or donate it.
- Do I have a duplicate of this item? Is more than one required? If not, choose which one to keep and sell, or donate the other items.
- Is this item broken or damaged? If yes, throw it in the trash.
- Does this item have sentimental value? Consider keeping sentimental items if you have room for them.
When you find yourself struggling to decide on a number of items, it can be helpful to take a step back and set them aside for the time being. This can allow you to clear your mind and approach the decision with fresh eyes later.
Decision-making may require time and consideration. Rushing to make a decision can often lead to regret. Therefore, it’s perfectly okay to take your time and allow yourself the opportunity to make a well-informed decision when you are struggling.
Step 3: Evaluate & Plan
At this point in your organizational process, you’ll need to step back and evaluate your available space. Take some time to assess the area and compare it to the items you have decided to keep.
This will give you a clear understanding of what you’re working with and how much room you have. Depending on whether or not you have enough space, you may have to narrow things down to your daily essentials.
Once you’ve taken stock of the space, it’s time to start thinking about how you want to organize your items. Consider the types of things you need to store and how frequently you use them. Do you need to keep certain items within easy reach, or are they things that can be stored away for longer periods?
Planning Tips
As you begin to plan out your organizational strategy, remember that you can take many different approaches. You might use bins and baskets to corral smaller items or opt for shelving units to keep everything organized. Whatever approach you take, consider the available space and what will work best for your needs.
- Pull out the pile of belongings that you decided to keep. Group similar items together by categorizing them. This will be especially helpful if you are decluttering a large room, multiple storage bins, or a kitchen. Once you have categorized all your belongings, you will have a better understanding of how much space you need for each category of items.
- For each category of items you have, it is important to have a dedicated storage place. Once you have identified the storage space, you can then determine if you need to explore alternative storage solutions.
- An important tip is to ensure you measure the space before ordering additional organizing products for your home. This will prevent any frustration and avoid delaying your project.
Step 4: Details & Design
This is my favorite part: cleaning, organizing, and beautifying any room or space. There’s just something about taking a cluttered or disorganized space and turning it into something neat, tidy. Whether clearing out a closet, rearranging furniture, or simply dusting and tidying up, I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I see the end result.

Grab your cleaning supplies, and let’s get started!
Before you start organizing your space, it’s essential to make sure it is thoroughly cleaned. Once drawers and cabinets are empty, consider wiping them down with a damp cloth to remove dust or grime.
Don’t forget to vacuum or sweep floors so they are free from any dirt or dust. Depending on the space you’re organizing, you may even want to take the extra step of wiping down the walls to ensure a fresh and clean environment.
It’s important to organize your belongings properly by categorizing them. For instance, keep all your dinner forks in one section and knives in another. Decide if you want to store your spices together or separately based on their use. Always store your skincare items separately from body or shower products. In short, put things away so that you can always find them easily.
Use organizing products like drawer dividers, shoe boxes, file folders, baskets, and bins to help. Every item can be organized; however, the storage solutions must be simple and effective so it requires little to no effort to maintain. If you make organization too difficult, it will not be maintained.
To keep your living space tidy, consider labeling your storage containers. This will help you quickly locate your belongings and prevent clutter from accumulating. You can buy a label maker, hand-write adhesive labels, or purchase pre-made labels.
Step 5: Maintain & Edit
Although maintaining an organized living space is important, striving for perfection in everyday life is impossible, so don’t pressure yourself.
Instead, I would like you to take a systematic approach to organizing your home. An efficient way to maintain an organized home is to implement a regular cleaning and laundry schedule. This schedule should include daily tasks such as wiping down surfaces, washing dishes, and doing laundry, as well as weekly and monthly tasks such as vacuuming, dusting, and deep cleaning.
In addition to organizing your home and editing your living space regularly. Our needs and desires change over time, and our living spaces should reflect those changes.
Editing your living space means assessing its functionality and making necessary adjustments. For example, if you have a home office, you may need to reorganize your workspace to make it more efficient. You may need to create a designated play area if you have children.
