17 Unique Stocking Stuffer Ideas for Adults (2023)
Even though my kiddos are adults, my stepdaughter, son, and daughter-in-law are still fun to shop for, so I have been browsing for unique stocking stuffer ideas. Since Santa is busy with all the little ones, I always give him a hand on the tradition of Christmas stockings.
This post shares unique stocking stuffer ideas.
Was a Christmas stocking something you left out on Christmas Eve as a child? It was part of my childhood and one of the first things I looked for on Christmas morning.
When Santa stuffed our Christmas stockings, he never wrapped the gifts. When my son, Derek, was little, I remember how his eyes glowed, pulling each little present from the stocking.
Today, I chose to wrap everything that I stuff into their socks. They all try to guess what it is before they open it, and it has become a fun Christmas tradition for our family. We look forward to it every year!
Why Christmas Stockings?
From what I read, there are no written records of how this tradition started. There seem to be legends that go back over 200 years. The history of stuffing the Christmas stocking is thought to originate in the life of Saint Nicholas.
One example of a legend is that Saint Nicholas overheard villagers talking about their girls needing help. Saint Nicholas wanted to help, but the villagers would not accept charity. He decided to help in secret.
After dark, he threw three bags of gold through an open window, and a piece of gold landed in a stocking. When the girls and their father woke up the following day, they were excited to find the bags of gold.
The girls were able to get married and live happily ever after. Another version of the story states Saint Nicholas threw three bags of gold directly into the stockings hung by the fireplace to dry.
A Classic Storybook
This reminds me of my favorite storybook, “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement Moore.
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
