Skincare has always been essential, and having sensitive skin has made my attempt to manage breakouts and redness even more challenging. As summer approaches, I have learned what brands work for me and what don’t. When you find something your skin loves, stay with it. Our skin talks to us and tells us when we are treating it well.
Summer Skin Care Tips
The Essentials
Cleansing
Cleansing your skin morning and night can be as simple as using warm water and a cleansing washcloth, or you may want to use a cleanser specifically made for washing daily pollutants and makeup from your skin. When I wear eye makeup, I prefer to remove it with makeup remover cleansing face wipes.
My favorite cleanser is from Annmarie Gianni. I have used her products for almost ten years, reducing the redness and breakouts with regular use. This brand is what I would consider higher-end and more expensive, but worth it for the results it provides. Annmarie Skincare is organic and all-natural, which has made a difference to my skin. The smell of their Aloe Herb Cleanser is something to look forward to daily. It is lightweight and makes my skin feel fresh. Other brands are highly recommended, such as CeraVe and Neutrogena.
Toners
Using a toner in the summertime can give your face a mist of coolness any time of the day. Keep it with you and spritz your face with freshness any time you need a lift. I love Rosemary Toning Mist, but you can also use brands like Tula and La Roche-Posay.
It is also a good idea to mist your face with toner right after cleansing before adding anything further. It is a perfect setting before serums, which I will discuss next.
Serums
My daytime serum is always a vitamin C-based serum. This has helped reduce age spots which started in my forties. I had a large one on my right cheek, which has now disappeared into a Circus Cell Serum by Annmarie Gianni. This has been the most significant investment in my skin, but it works, and I can’t imagine not using this daily. You only require a small amount rubbing it into your skin upwardly. Other popular brands of vitamin C serums are La Roche-Posay and Drunk Elephant.
I recently started adding retinoids to my evening skincare routine. Retinoids support aging skin by improving cell turnover, and it stimulates collagen. Carole Tuttle created a skincare line and tried her anti-aging serum, which works for me. My biggest challenge with aging skin is the neck and décolleté; I am now using her neck restoring cream. I have used dressing your truth makeup for years, and her skincare line is perfect.
The last serum I like to use is a self-tanner. I put this on once or twice a week to give a little color to my face and neck for the summer season since I like to limit sun exposure but love the look of a tan. Luna Bronze’s good night face bronzing serum hydrates, brightens, and nourishes while it tans. It has natural tanning adaptive, so if you like a tan without the sun, I recommend this brand.
Moisturizers
Hydrating day and night are essential to have soft dewy skin, and it should be included in your daily routines no matter the season. My preference is moisturizing oils, but there are many great products on the market. Again, I keep it natural, so my favorite is Herbal Facial Oil for Normal & Combination Skin. Other moisturizers that are recommended are La Roche-Posay and Drunk Elephant.
Eye Cream
Eye cream should be used in both your morning and evening routine. Different products support different needs, from anti-aging, brightening, and the reduction of under-eye circles. I have tried several brands with a few favorites and recommendations, such as Anti Aging Eye Cream, Eye Corrector Serum, and Banana Bright Eye Cream.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen should not just be a summer skin care tip. It should be a daily practice all year round. Finding a light sunscreen with a great SPF has been a bit of a challenge. I don’t want anything to be greasy and prefer a cream over a spray. I have SPF30 in the BB Cream Foundation I use, but for those days I want to go bare, Neutrogena’s SPF60 has been my go-to. A little goes a long way, and I like the feel of it on my face. This is the last thing I add before starting my day or putting my makeup on.
Skin Care extras
Face Masks
I use a face mask once weekly to elevate my skincare. I like to do this on Sunday evenings, which makes a great self-care practice after a busy week. This mud mask comes in a powder form, and you mix it with water or toning mist. This cute bowl and applicator will give you a spa feel. It goes on cool and dries the way mud does. Once rinsed, your face feels renewed and ready for a new week.
Face Exfoliation
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and cleans your pores. I swap my skin care cleanser twice a week for an exfoliator in the summer. This reduces breakouts and makes your skin feel soft and silky. Carole Tuttle makes a beautiful exfoliator, and Annmarie Skincare takes it to the next level with her microdermabrasion.
Jade Roller
If you wake up with tired eyes, keep your jade roller in the fridge and use it after your moisturizer to keep it seeping into your skin. The incredible movement of the jade stone will reduce inflammation and help with swelling under the eyes. There are different price points on jade rollers like Annmarie skincare, Carol Tuttle, and Amazon.
Collagen Powder
This flavorless powder will help your hair, skin, and nails as a final extra to your perfect skincare routine for summer. I have been using Organika’s brand for years which I have enjoyed, but I am considering switching to the marine version to try something new. I think both options are great, and other reputable brands also work. This powder can easily be added to your morning coffee, smoothie, and a glass of water or juice.
If you are in Canada and want to try Annmarie Skincare, although they ship to Canada, you can also purchase from Gaya’s Secrets, located in Ontario.
Add these skin care tips as part of your routine for summer and enjoy the benefits. Your skin will thank you for it in the most positive way.
