How to Style a Coffee Table
Achieving a designer look for your coffee table is easy, regardless of your personal style. You can effortlessly elevate your living space using products you may already have. With these tips, you’ll have the confidence to spruce up your home decor.
Our Current Coffee Table
My husband made our DIY rustic coffee table a couple of years after we moved into our home. It was an inexpensive project, and it has served us well. It is industrial rustic, which is not my current design style; however, I have been able to decorate the coffee table in a way that brings in my personal touch through selected pieces. The great thing about design styles is you can mix them. That allows you to show off your personality in your home, and sometimes, it enables you to work with what you have.
As I mentioned in my post, 5 tips for styling a bedroom dresser, starting any styling project with a clean slate is always a good idea. Move everything off your coffee table so you can visualize where each piece will go and how it feels. Everyone’s needs differ, so you must consider only the tips supporting your lifestyle.
Coffee Table Styling Tips
1. Ground the Space
You want to pick a decor piece for the top of your coffee table that will ground the space. Decorative trays and coffee table books are great options. Trays come in various materials, such as rattan, metal, and wood. They come in multiple shapes: round, square, rectangular, octagon, or abstract. Coffee table books are also a great starting point. You can layer them for height and pick your favorites. It may even be the book you are currently reading.

2. Pretty Storage
Are you concerned about storage? Do you need to keep your remote handy or maybe an extra pair of reading glasses? Like me? Bring in some function by adding a tray, a basket, or a storage box for your coffee table. Keep your style pretty by placing everyday essentials out of sight or storing them beautifully.

3. Multiple Levels
Add different heights to your coffee table styling using planters and vases with stems or flowers. Avoid having all accents at the same level. Give the eye something to look at by moving from one item to the next. I also like to add height with decorative urns or candlesticks.

4. Curate Decorate Objects
Add decorative objects that you love and that make you feel good. Use items that work with your style, colors that coordinate with your room, and textures to give dimension. Include candles, beads, links, knots, magnifying glasses, and collected items from travel or seasonal decor. You want the space to feel personal and yours.
5. Balance
The power of three will help your coffee table feel balanced. If you have more than three accessories, keep the amount to an odd number, and you will find a balance. When styling any area, edit until you are happy with the area of the room you are working on. It is normal to style a space in your home and not quite love it immediately. I keep editing, or sometimes, after a day or two of living with it, I know exactly what I need to change to love it!
The coffee table is a versatile piece of furniture that can be updated to match the seasons. You can refresh and enhance your decor by swapping out flowers, accents, and books. I like to switch up my accessories every few months, using seasonal decor in unique ways to give my living and family room a renewed and updated appearance.
