I recently refreshed our dining room, and these small changes were just what we needed as we approached a new season. Adding natural and organic details is one of my favorite things to do when decorating. I found a few favorite finds I can not wait to share with you!
Note: You will want your small space to feel open and airy, no matter your design style. There are simple ways to do this that will create the most beautiful, inviting space for you and your family.
How to Decorate a Small Dining Room
1. reduce everyday dining furniture
If your dining table has an extension or chairs are available for extra guests, you should remove and store them. Reducing your everyday dining furniture to the essentials gives you more room and opens up the space. I have a table extension and chairs to entertain six or more guests. We keep these in our storage room for easy access when needed.
2. limit your Decor to a few pieces
Avoid cluttering your small dining room with a large number of decorative pieces. How much I love decorating, less is more, and you will find it makes small spaces appear larger when you limit your decor to a few pieces. My favorite dining room decor purchases are botanical prints, candle sticks, vases, serving boards or bowls, plants, and life-like stems.
3. Add natural and organic details
Nothing is more straightforward than adding natural and organic details to your decor. Adding plants is one of my favorite things to do, and my recent purchase of a natural rubber plant will test my indoor green thumb. Give me any outdoor plant to take care of, and it will thrive, but indoor, not so much. I typically purchase life-like artificial greenery, but I like the look of this real-life plant. Time will tell if I can keep it this beautiful.
You can add natural and organic touches through wicker and seagrass baskets, wood-like serving and display boards, or by filling a vase with stems or a bowl with fruit. I also like using botanical or still-life prints in the dining room. This set of botanical prints has a neutral textured background with sketched botanical florals —an easy way to update any space.
4. accessorize with a pattern or color
Add patterns or colors with area rugs and wall art, and yes, why not add a pillow or throw blanket to your dining chair? I love the design of this pretty pillow offers. Still neutral, but repetitive floral patterns make it feel comfortable and inviting.
3. Create a pretty centerpiece
There are many ways to create a centerpiece for your dining table. When styling, I recommend limiting it to three decor pieces with varying heights to help create balance. Use vases or urns with organic stems or flowers, and add serving pieces and candles or candle sticks. Curate a vignette with a wood tray or basket. A centerpiece is a great place to bring in some creativity!
