Small Home Office Design Ideas: A Visual Guide
I believe that having a designated workspace at home is essential. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a tiny corner or a separate room for work. While preparing to update my home office, I started the process by creating small home office design ideas. Follow these helpful tips to create a mood for any room in your home.
If you’re planning to redecorate a room in your home, creating a mood board can be a helpful way to visualize the desired look and feel. Compiling inspirational pieces and ideas in one place makes it easier to get a sense of how the space will come together. As someone who is a visual learner, I find this approach particularly useful. If you need any guidance on how to get started, I’d be happy to help!

Small Home Office Design Ideas
As we gradually update our home, we like to tackle small projects such as organizing and room makeovers that fit our budget. When I decide to revamp a room, I first consider its purpose and create a mood board to serve as a foundation for my design plans. These are the steps I followed in planning my home office update.
1. Create a Pinterest board and pin designs you love
Pinterest is a great place to find and save ideas. You can easily create a board named Home Office Inspiration and start pinning. My inspiration came from one of my favorite interior designers, Bria Hammel.
2. Chose photos of places or things that give you the feeling you are looking for in the space
My husband has his own office, so my office is a very personal space for me. It is located on the north side of the house and, unfortunately, doesn’t receive much natural light. To lighten the room, I aimed to create a more open and airy atmosphere. To achieve this, I drew inspiration from serene and calming views. Using colors, textures, photographs, and accessories, I was able to bring this feeling into my home office design board.
3. Source products from websites and your favorite shops
Furniture and home decor websites you could consider using. I also have home decor resources on my website and my favorite finds.
- Etsy
- Wayfair
- Target
- Home Depot
- Ikea
- Bed Bath & Beyond/Overstock
- Bouclair Home
- Amazon
- Collection Prints
3. Create a mood board on Canva
Many programs can assist you in creating your mood board. I like Canva. It is simple, user-friendly, and they have an excellent free version.
Creating a mood board is not just about selecting products for the design but also about capturing the desired ambiance of the room. When designing a room for personal use, you can include products already owned or purchased in the future.
I have decided to repurpose the small walk-in closet in my home office as a storage space for my growing collection of home decor items. This way, I can easily access my seasonal decor and accessories to give my rooms a fresh look whenever I want.
